My desire to apply to the position of Student’s Ombuds reflects my concern, my engagement, and the close relationship I have developed with the students, from the moment I started to teach, first in Secondary Education institutions (1986-88) and then at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu [ESEV/IPV], from 1988 onwards.

The core of all formal or non-formal organisations, whether they be schools, companies, institutions, or families, is the people upon which they are built and the relationships they establish among them. This is the motto I live by and the one I try to put into practice, both personally and professionally.

The well-being of all students should be the main focus of any educational institution and the Student’s Ombudsman can and should play a crucial role in this endeavour, by listening, guiding, and tending to their needs and concerns, and by favouring a healthy environment and a positive experience at this stage of their education.

My insight into how the IPV and its schools work, as well as my deep knowledge of their management bodies and regulations are major assets that grant me greater openness and availability to listen to, advise and guide all the IPV’s students and stand for their rights; to respect and cooperate with the organisations representing the students (Associations) and to ensure coordinated work with the bodies and entities that most directly deal with students; to respect and cooperate with the school management bodies, especially with the school Pedagogical Council, in matters deemed important or necessary or whenever my cooperation is required; to collaborate with the IPV’s Department of Responsibility and Social Innovation in initiatives aimed at the students’ well-being; to cooperate with the whole academic community as well as with the community in the implementation of actions and/or initiatives that aim at facilitating students’ integration and that will contribute to a positive image of the IPV.

As part of my work project, I will focus on three major concerns: School Dropout, Mental Health, and the Well-Being and the Quality of Life of all IPV students.

I will be open to new proposals that are likely to promote the well-being of students and the whole IPV community and to new challenges and opportunities that may arise or that are of importance to all students.
